Launched in the market 10 years ago, Viagra changed the sexual lives of a great number of men suffering from erection problems. Since that time the ED drug has developed into a well-known brand name. As British health information sources suggest, the ED drugs can be linked to the recent three-fold increase of such STDs as gonorrhea in men over 45 years of age. The increase is 4 times bigger than that in teenagers.

According to John Dean, president of the International Society for Sexual Medicine, Viagra provides men with more sexual freedom which often leads to extramarital affairs. Frequent changes of sexual partners are a major cause of sex-related diseases.

Although the drug can hardly be blamed for reckless behavior, the British findings do indicate that Viagra pretty much does its job. As for the consequences, they are rather a result of human shortcomings, then a medication issue.

During the trial, mice with engineered Duchenne muscular dystrophy were given either placebo or a dose of Viagra approximately equal to that taken by men to treat erectile dysfunction. The drug was administered once a day for six weeks. The findings of the tests suggest that Viagra improved the heart performance in mice helping maintain normal heart function. According to the researchers, the choice of Viagra was based on the results of previous medical trials.

One of the major causes of heart-related muscular dystrophy is the defects in cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate), a natural substance promoting smooth relaxation of vascular muscle. Viagra and similar medications known as PDE5 inhibitors such as Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra (vardenadil) restore the defective cGMP signaling pathway thus preventing or delaying heart failure in patients with muscular dystrophy.

Researchers believe that the new findings can facilitate development of innovative approaches to clinical treatment of heart muscle problems and cardiac complications. However, future studies are needed in order to prove that prescribing Viagra to children can be a safe way of preventing heart damage.

All drugs work essentially the same way and have similar side effects. Levitra may work a little faster in some people and may be less sensitive to food or alcohol intake. Viagra has been around for a lot longer and has a proven safety track record

Mechanism of action

Part of the physiological process of erection involves the parasympathetic nervous system causing the release of nitric oxide (NO) in the corpus cavernosum of the penis. NO binds to the receptors of the enzyme guanylate cyclase which results in increased levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), leading to smooth muscle relaxation (vasodilation) in the corpus cavernosum, resulting in increased inflow of blood and an erection.
Sildenafil is a potent and selective inhibitor of cGMP specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) which is responsible for degradation of cGMP in the corpus cavernosum. The molecular structure of sildenafil is similar to that of cGMP and acts as a competitive binding agent of PDE5 in the corpus cavernosum, resulting in more cGMP and better erections. Without sexual stimulation, and therefore lack of activation of the NO/cGMP system, sildenafil should not cause an erection. Other drugs that operate by the same mechanism include tadalafil (Cialis®) and vardenafil (Levitra®).
Sildenafil is metabolised by hepatic enzymes and excreted by both the liver and kidneys. If taken with a high-fat meal, there may be a delay in absorption of sildenafil and the peak effect might be reduced slightly as the plasma concentration will be lowered. (more…)

As of 2005, the co-promotion rights of GSK on Levitra have been “transferred back” to Bayer in many markets outside of the United States. In Italy, Bayer markets the product as Levitra and GSK markets the product as Vivanza.
